PCP engagement in post-intensive care recovery

This multicenter prospective cohort study will use surveys and focus groups with a broad range of pediatric practices to better understand community pediatricians’ familiarity with PICS-p, common gaps in care of survivors of pediatric critical illness, best practices to ensure quality follow-up care, and feasibility of administering outcome measures.

Establishing PICU follow-up programs

The POST-PICU subgroup sponsored a symposium in Fall 2024 with panelists representing 8 existing PICU follow-up programs. Panelists discussed program start-up, funding, personnel, outcomes, and maintenance, as well as discussion of the future of PICU follow-up care. A summary of the discussion is being prepared for publication to disseminate to the broader pediatric critical care community.

PICU follow-up clinic registry

We are working to establish a registry of sites with post-ICU follow-up programs with information about patient populations included, multidisciplinary resources, clinic structures, and outcomes evaluated aimed at knowledge sharing and research collaboration.
Mobile phone screening for family post-intensive care syndrome symptoms: This study uses a mobile phone survey to screen parents for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and health-related quality of life via text message.

Post-Intensive Care Syndrome-Pediatrics (PICS-p)

This multicenter prospective longitudinal cohort study is enrolling 500 PICU patients and their families at sites across the United States with multiple follow-up evaluations over the course of the two years following PICU admission to evaluate outcomes across a range of health domains.

Pediatric Critical Care Core Outcomes Set and Core Outcomes Measurement Set

This multi-year project led by the POST-PICU Investigators in collaboration with the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN) included a scoping review of all published literature evaluating post-discharge outcomes following pediatric critical care, a Delphi process involving research, clinical, and family/patient advocate stakeholders to develop a recommended set of outcomes to assess following PICU care, and a final Delphi process involving a multidisciplinary expert panel to recommend outcome measures for use in research and clinical care. This effort has resulted in multiple publications with more in development.
