PCP engagement in post-intensive care recovery
This multicenter prospective cohort study uses surveys and qualitative interviews with a broad range of pediatric practices to better understand community pediatricians’ familiarity with PICS-p, common gaps in care of survivors of pediatric critical illness, best practices to ensure quality follow-up care, and feasibility of administering outcome measures.

Common data elements for PICU outcome studies
This project will use a Delphi process involving multidisciplinary experts in PICU outcomes to develop recommendations for common data elements to collect for PICU outcome studies.

SECOND ACT Study: Evaluating the prevalence of second victim syndrome among pediatric intensive care providers
This is a multicenter prospective survey-based study of multidisciplinary PICU providers to evaluate the prevalence of second victim syndrome among physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, and nurses, as well as factors associated with second victim syndrome and supports available across institutions.

Point prevalence study of PICU recurrent admissions, follow-up care, and post-acute care stays
This is a new multicenter prospective cohort study currently in development to evaluate the prevalence of PICU patients with recurrent admissions, the recommended or planned follow-up care at discharge, the prevalence of and factors associated with discharge to inpatient post-acute care, and family/caregiver perspectives on desires for follow-up care.

PICU follow-up clinic registry
We are working to establish a registry of sites with post-ICU follow-up programs with information about patient populations included, multidisciplinary resources, clinic structures, and outcomes evaluated aimed at knowledge sharing and research collaboration.
Post-Intensive Care Syndrome-Pediatrics (PICS-p)
This multicenter prospective longitudinal cohort study is enrolling 500 PICU patients and their families at sites across the United States with multiple follow-up evaluations over the course of the two years following PICU admission to evaluate outcomes across a range of health domains.

Completed Research
Pediatric Critical Care Core Outcomes Set and Core Outcomes Measurement Set
This multi-year project led by the POST-PICU Investigators in collaboration with the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN) included a scoping review of all published literature evaluating post-discharge outcomes following pediatric critical care, a Delphi process involving research, clinical, and family/patient advocate stakeholders to develop a recommended set of outcomes to assess following PICU care, and a final Delphi process involving a multidisciplinary expert panel to recommend outcome measures for use in research and clinical care. This effort has resulted in multiple publications with more in development.

Establishing PICU follow-up programs
The POST-PICU subgroup sponsored a symposium in Fall 2024 with panelists representing 8 existing PICU follow-up programs. Panelists discussed program start-up, funding, personnel, outcomes, and maintenance, as well as discussion of the future of PICU follow-up care. A summary of the discussion is being prepared for publication to disseminate to the broader pediatric critical care community.
